Honor Guard

ELIGIBILITY

Members of the AAFB Honor Guard are exceptional members of the Air Force. As such, they must exemplify the standards of customs and courtesies, dress and appearance, and personal conduct. Specifically, applicants must not be on a Control Roster, nor have a UIF or history of non-judicial punishment under Article 15 of the UCMJ (pending or otherwise). Additionally, applicants cannot be on a profile or weight management program. Personnel on shaving waivers are not allowed to join the team until such time as the waiver has been rescinded. Those individuals enrolled in CDC’s and/or in upgrade training must weigh commitment against workload. However, there will be time allotted for CDC study during the two week training. The applicant must be of the highest moral character and portray a professional military image. 

TRAINING

All applicants must complete a probationary two-week training and orientation course. During this phase of training, the applicant will be evaluated on how well he/she is able to learn and understand the material as well as how well they work in a team environment. Once the applicant is accepted, they will be placed on one of three flights. Each flight will meet at the Honor Guard Building 87, 07:30 to 16:30, M – F for training and to perform any detail that are scheduled during this time period. After the two-week primary rotation, the member will return to their work center and remain on stand-by for two weeks. During the two week stand-by rotation, members will only be tasked when manning shortages occur and the primary flight cannot fulfill the details. When the member rotates on to the off flight, they will not be called upon unless absolutely deemed necessary by the NCOIC and all taskings will be coordinated with the members first sergeant. When possible, all appointments should be scheduled during members off status to avoid interfering with Honor Guard training and details. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Members may be required to perform any duties within the scope of the AAFB Honor Guard. Members may be required to travel to perform various ceremonies deemed necessary by the Department of Defense, the Wing Commander, or the NCOIC of the Honor Guard. Due to the serious nature of the various details, Honor Guard members MUST be ON-TIME for all ceremonies and practices. Each member WILL keep a record of all of their details and events surrounding their details to aid in various award/medal packages should they be nominated for such an honor. Members WILL file travel vouchers in a timely manner. It is the duty and responsibility of all Honor Guard members to volunteer for details to ease the burden on the other members of the team. If at any time, any member of the team has a question, concerns, or complaints; it is their right and responsibility to address it utilizing the proper chain of command. 

CONDUCT

Members are responsible for outstanding attitude, conduct, and appearance IAW AFI 34-503 (USAF Honor Guard Program) and AFI 36-2903 (Dress and Personal Appearance of Air Force Personnel). These standards will be represented in the spirit of cooperation and proper respect at all times. At details, members will conduct themselves in a manner relevant to the ceremony (If mingling and conversation is called for they will do so, if not, then they will keep to themselves in a location out of the spot light). If at any time a member fails to meet the standards of the program, immediate termination of service on the Honor Guard will occur. It is the duty and responsibility of all Honor Guard members to represent AAFB and the United States Air Force with DIGNITY and HONOR.

ATTENDANCE and PERFORMANCE

Applying for the Honor Guard is voluntary. Once an individual makes the team, it then becomes a mandatory military function. All members are required to attend mandatory practices on Wednesdays. If the member is unable to make practices and/or details due to mission requirements or sickness, the member’sFirst Sergeant must notify the NCOIC of the Honor Guard in advance. The team relies on precision and teamwork gained through practice. Therefore, continuous absences, except for TDY/Leave, cannot be tolerated. Future changes in workload/manning that may conflict with attendance must be considered and will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

UNIFORMS and APPEARANCE

One set of Ceremonial Service Dress will be provided to each member as available. In the event the member does not complete the full 18-month period of service, he/she will replace the uniform in kind. Uniforms will be maintained in a clean, pressed condition at all times, both on & off Honor Guard duty. All members will be authorized cleaning of ceremonial uniform items IAW AAFBI 34-242 for those uniform items soiled while performing in or training for official honor guard ceremonies. Each member must present an appearance above and beyond that expected of Air Force members not on the Honor Guard.

LEAVE AND TDY

Members are required to notify the NCOIC, Base Honor Guard program of all TDY’s, leaves, formal training, etc, before departing AAFB. TDY’s in excess of 30 days will lengthen the member’s term of service by the total length of the TDY.
